area paI of Pandya (pal)

The term area paI of Pandya refers to a cortical area located in the portion of the superior temporal gyrus that is hidden in the wall of the lateral fissure in the macaque. Defined on the basis of cytomyeloarchitecture it lies between the auditory cortex and the insula. "Like other cortical areas adjoining limbic structures [it] shows low differentiation, as expressed by very low myelination", low density of granule cells and high cellular density in the internal pyramidal layer (V) and the multiform layer (VI) ( Pandya-1973 ).
