parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC)

The term parieto-insular vestibular cortex refers to an area located at the junction of the insula and parietal lobe, which has been proposed by some to be the core vestibular region. though responses to stimulation of vestibular pathways have also been recorded in other parts of the parietal lobe, including somatosensory cortex. Defined on the basis of multiple criteria, including connectivity, electrophysiology, and fMRI, it involves the granular insula, the adjacent parietal operculum, and the retroinsular area. It is found in the human and the macaeque ( Lopez-2011; see also 'Publications About It' > e-publication).
