It is located in the parietal lobe largely caudal to the postcentral gyrus and receives major input via intracortical connections from the primary somesthetic area. It is identified with the cytoarchitecturally defined area 5 of Brodmann (human) and area 7 of Brodmann (human) ( Schiebler-1999 ).
