coccygeal segment (SPCcg)

The term coccygeal segment (SPCcg) refers to the 30th segment at the ventral end of the spinal cord (SPC). Located ventral to the sacral segments (SPCsc) it gives rise to the corresponding pair of coccygeal nerves. ( Carpenter-1983 ). Defined by histology they are found in all vertebrates ( Swanson-2015 ). In some humans it gives rise to two pairs of coccygeal nerves ( Schiebler-1999 ). Defined by dissection, it is found in all vertebrates ( Swanson-2015 ). Final 24 Dec 2024.

Also known as: Segmenta coccygea, coccygeal segments, coccygeal segments of spinal cord, Pars coccygea, coccygeal part of spinal cord

Models Where It Appears
Classical Vertebrate Central Nervous System

The Classical Vertebrate Central Nervous System is a hierarchical model of gray matter structures that are common to the brain and spinal cord of all vertebrates. As in other classical models, structures are grouped by proximity as observed on dissection, and the upper levels correspond roughly to their organization in the embryo. The hierarchical organization is based on the Basic Partts List for Adult Nervous System in All Animals ( Swanson-2104 ), the nomenclature on NeuroNames ( Bowden-2012 ).
