somatic sensory fibers (GSA)

The term somatic sensory fibers (GSA) refers to the peripheral processes of bipolar neurons that provide sensory innervation of the skin and body wall. These neurons send central processes to the spinal cord via their dorsal root fibers or to the hindbrain via cranial nerves: the trigeminal nerve, the facial nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve or the vagus nerve ( Carpenter-1983 ).

Also known as: general somatic afferents, general somatic afferent fibers, somatic sensory fibers
