The term olfactory system refers to a histologically and functionally defined set of unimodal sensory structures involved in the processing of oderant information ( Yilmazer-Hanke-2012 ) It is present in the human ( Buck--2013 ), macaque ( Price-1990 ), rat ( Swanson-2004 ) and mouse ( AMBA-2024 ). It is composed of the olfactory nerve (1n), olfactory bulbs (OLB), olfactory tract (oltr) and olfactory cortex (OLC). While the relative sizes and locations of structures is quite different in the brains of primates and rodents, the connections and physiological functions are similar. Updated 19 Jun 2024.
