external pyramidal layer
Acronym:
The term external pyramidal layer is a cytoarchitectural term denoting the most superficial layer of cerebral cortex in which pyramidal cells predominate. In neocortex it is layer III ( Carpenter-1983 ). In areas of agranular cortex with minimal evidence of an external granular layer (II), the external pyramidal layer is sometimes labeled layer II/III.
