posterior parahippocampal gyrus
Acronym: PPHG
The term posterior parahippocampal gyrus refers to the more caudal of two parts of the parahippocampal gyrus of the limbic lobe in the human ( Gray-1918b ) and the macaque ( Martin-2000 ). The other part is the fusiform gyrus.
It is bounded medially by the presubiculum of the hippocampal formation and laterally by the fusiform gyrus. Histologically, Brodmann-1909 classed it as perirhinal area 34; ( Economo-1927 ) as TH - area temporohippocampica. It has no topological equivalent in the smooth cortex of the rodent and no histological equivalent in the location between presubiculum and more lateral temporal TE areas in the rat ( Swanson-1994 ).
Functionally, it and the fusiform gyrus together constitute the parahippocampal cortex ( Glasser-2016 ).
